Aviation fuel supplier requires 24 hour security drainage containment system

As you are all too aware, there are significant risks of pollution to the environment when containing and dispensing aviation fuel.  In fact a third party supplier of jet fuel to a London Airport was fined £40,000 (24 September 2010) and ordered to pay the Environment Agency in excess of £14,000 for its costs, after severely polluting groundwater beneath the airport, with at least 139,000 litres of Jet A-1 aviation fuel.  The cost of remediation to date is approximately £1m.

Darcy, the specialists in the control and containment of hazardous liquids, has developed a unique draintector to support leak detection systems and enhance pollution control measures.  Our system is controlled by an “oil detecting probe” that is positioned within the drainage system or onsite oil/water interceptors.  Upon detection of high levels of oil the probe triggers a valve that seals the drainage system preventing pollutants entering the groundwater network.

Utilising GSM and web based technology Central Monitoring Systems can be linked into this device immediately alerting of a spill or leak promoting environmental best practice.  Business management systems control this device at the touch of a button as a preventative measure at times of high risk, i.e. during deliveries making this the ultimate pollution prevention and control system.

With no civil works required and rapid installation this unit is cost effective and provides minimal disruption to work activities.

Companies have a duty of care to comply with environmental legislation and ensure that the sites they operate are not a source of pollution.  draintector systems are installed in the appropriate locations to contain spills on site as well as automatically maintaining pollution systems to reduce the risk of pollution as well as significantly reducing waste management costs.  The draintector system is currently in use at numerous airports across the UK.

A recent case study clearly highlights how the installation of a pollution containment system provides the necessary site security.

Problem

The aprons of the airfield were at risk from major spills of aviation fuel as well as in the event of a major Fire incident at the airport and the resultant Fire Water Run off would need to be contained before being tested by the relevant authorities and released or pumped in to holding tanks for further treatment.

Solution

To activate a system which would contain all liquids within the drainage system provided the necessary site security system to contain any liquid run off from the runways and other key areas. Bladders were inserted into Five strategic drain locations and the cabinets located in easy to access areas for activaltion.

Benefit

They are now able to provide 24 hour security for the drains at the airport and in the event of either a spill of pollutant of any kind or in the event of a Fire, are able to shut off the drains and therefore avoid any liquids from entering the surrounding ground water. The site also operates a spill response team who are able to deal with contained spillages safely and effectively. In addition the Fire Brigade are able to shut down the site in the event of any major incident and deal with the fire Water Run off in a contained environment.
