Isolation of part or full drainage system to retain spillages or fire-fighting run-off

The Environment Agency PPG’s guidance on incident response planning highlights causes of environmental incidents on sites include spill containment failure, failure to contain fire fighting water and impact of flooding on part or all of your site. These incidents could affect drainage systems, surface water and groundwater. Impacts can be immediate and long lasting and you may be responsible for the costs of cleanup. (PPG21)

Key points of legislation

Managing fire water and major spillages: PPG18
- Shut-off valves or penstocks can isolate part or the whole of a site to facilitate the retention of spillages or fire-fighting run-off on site. Their effectiveness depends on the capacity of the drainage system.
- They may be operated manually or triggered by means of automatic sensors. As a general rule, simple systems are best.
- Automatic sensors and closure devices may be used to ensure a rapid response on sites where an incident might not be immediately noticed.

- Recommends planning for site drainage – foul, surface and trade effluent drainage systems including features such as:
  - firewater/spillage containment systems;
  - pollution control devices (shut-off valves/penstocks fitted in drains);
